A LIST NOT TO BE MISSED

It also goes rather well with excellent food, which is why we’ve always taken our wine list seriously. After all, everyone enjoys reading a “best cellar”. We’ve spent some time revamping our list recently, making more room for new acquaintances while still keeping faith with all our old friends.

Whether Barolo or Chianti, Prosecco or Lambrusco, Italy is well-known for its wines. For an Italian family, a shared bottle of wine is as much a part of a meal as the bread or fresh vegetables. It’s an essential ingredient in all the best dining experiences and food memories.

We’ve stuck with that philosophy here at Casalinga Ristorante Italiano, and we have one of the most comprehensive wine lists in Gauteng. All the classic wine-growing regions of the world are represented, with a special emphasis on Italy and of course our native South African wines.

If you’re celebrating a special occasion or simply enjoying the finer things in life, a glass or two of well-chosen wine will perfectly complement your meal. We’re always happy to make wine pairing suggestions, so please feel free to ask your waiter for advice.

According to the old proverb, there is truth in wine. At Casalinga we believe there can also be joy, beauty, friendship and love – and those were the criteria we used when we carefully created our new wine list.

WINE, GOOD FOOD, FAMILY AND FRIENDS.

That’s all there is to it.

ITALIAN WINES

Pure bottled sunshine and naturally the perfect accompaniment to any of our classic Italian dishes. Italian wines are an integral part of every important meal and range from authentic “peasant” wines through to some seriously refined vintages.

CHAMPAGNE

“In victory you deserve champagne; in defeat you need it”. Napoleon knew a bit about both winning and losing, but with our winning selection of genuine French champagnes you’ll never be at a loss for the perfect toast.

PROSECCO

It’s impossible not to be happy when you have a glass of Prosecco in your hand. The perfect celebration drink for those moments that make life even more special, whether it’s an engagement, a graduation or a birth in the family.

CAP CLASSIQUE

Anything France can do; South Africa can do better... South African sparkling wines are among the best in the world – just don’t call them champagne! Instead, chill them, pop them and share them with friends and family.

SAUVIGNON BLANC

The popularity of this white wine is easy to understand. Whether you prefer yours flinty or fruity, the bouquets are always delightful and the drinking easy. Excellent with oysters, asparagus and delicately flavoured fish dishes.

CHARDONNAY

Wooded or unwooded, there’s no mistaking Chardonnay. After a few years in the wilderness, it’s enjoying a welcome resurgence. Try pairing a bottle with one our risotto, chicken or prawn dishes, and enjoy a lingering finish.

CHENIN BLANC

The perfect balance of fruit and acidity, this is a more complex wine that improves on acquaintance. Spend some time getting to know it and see how it pairs perfectly with vegetable dishes, salads, chicken and fish. Also excellent on its own!

POUR A GLASS AND EXPRESS YOURSELF.

Because it’s not good to keep things bottled up.

ROSÉ

Think pink! Perfect for blushing brides or anyone who’s feeling the heat on a summer’s afternoon. Refreshing red fruit flavours make rosé easy to drink and the ideal accompaniment to anything that you would share with friends (including secrets!).

SHIRAZ

Powerful, full-bodied wines that contain hints of dark fruit, pepper, chocolate and even leather. Drinking Shiraz is a sensuous experience – this is one of the more seductive wines, so be prepared to be lured in. Ideal with salmon or beef.

CABERNET SAUVIGNON

“Cab Sav” is perhaps the ultimate red wine. We’re talking seriously peppery aromas – or perhaps black currant. One of the world’s most popular wines, it can also be one of the most sought-after. Enjoy it while it lasts!

MERLOT

It’s impossible to drink a glass of Merlot without thinking of orchards… Plums, damsons and mulberries combine with more surprising (but very welcome) hints of chocolate and coffee. Practically your entire meal in a glass!

PINOTAGE

South Africa’s “own” wine, Pinotage is not for everyone – just for people with exceptional taste. Created when Pinot Noir vines were crossed with Hermitage, this uniquely South African wine manages to be regal and down to earth at the same time.

PINOT NOIR

The “prince” of red grape varieties, Pinot Noir becomes more popular every year. It generally has less tannin than other red wines, meaning it can be a lighter wine. It works particularly well with salmon, roast chicken or pasta dishes. Just saying.

DESSERT WINE

End your Casalinga meal on a high note with a glass of dessert wine. Charming without being overpoweringly sweet, they cut perfectly through the creaminess of a cheese board and give you another great reason to linger.

Meet your new favourite wine

Maybe you’re feeling fruity or have a dry sense of humour? Perhaps you’re vivacious or full-bodied or you have a bubbly personality? Then again, you could be elegant or well-rounded. For every kind of person, we have every kind of wine.
